Jujur, saya tidak ingat kapan terakhir kali saya membaca cerita serius seperti Leila S. Chudori. Bukannya saya sudah kehilangan rasa akan kisah-kisah yang demikian. Akan tetapi, saya memang sedang tidak ingin membaca kisah yang terlalu gelap dan menampar realitas.

Sebetulnya, saya mendapatkan buku ini dari supervisor saya sebelumnya. Sebagai orang-orang yang memiliki jiwa sosial tinggi, tentu kisah-kisah seperti Malam Terakhir terasa begitu cocok untuk dibagikan. Maka dari itu, ketika saya mendapat buku ini, saya merasa excited. Kapan lagi saya bisa membaca kisah lain dari Leila S. Chudori.

Saya dan kisah realitas sosial

Pada dasarnya, kisah-kisah yang diceritakan oleh Leila S. Chudori menjadi salah satu jenis tulisan yang saya sukai. Saya tahu bahwa banyak sekali realitas sosial yang tak seindah khayalan. Banyak hal-hal tabu yang sengaja tidak dibicarakan dan menjadi stigma di masyarakat. Maka dari itu, saya menyukai gaya bercrita dari Leila.

Malam Terakhir merupakan kumpulan cerpen pertama dari Leila yang saya baca. Kalau saya boleh jujur, saya lebih suka cerita panjang dari Leila. Pulang dan Laut Bercerita menjadi kisah-kisah favorit saya. Akan tetapi, saya akui apa yang dikatakan oleh Leila itu benar. Menuliskan cerita pendek tentu akan jauh lebih sulit untuk dilakukan. Terdapat aturan-aturan tak kasat mata yang hadir. Dengan demikian, menuliskan sejumlah cerita pendek dan kemudian membukukannya pasti tidaklah mudah.

Kisah-kisah yang diceritakan oleh Leila ini kalau boleh saya bilang merupakan jenis kisah yang frontal dan vokal, apalagi mengenai berbagai realitas sosial yang ada. Mulai dari identitas gender, eksplorasi diri, agama, seksualitas, hingga keberadaan dari minoritas.

Salah satu kisah favorit saya adalah Air Suci Sita. Saya mengagumi cara Leila yang menganologikan kisah dari tokoh-tokohnya dengan kisah Rama, Shinta, dan Rahwana secara tersirat. Menurut saya, banyak hal yang ditekankan dalam kisah itu yang nyata adanya. Terkadang, berbagai kisah yang ada, bahkan dalam dunia wewayangan, masih banyak upaya mendiskreditkan keberadaan perempuan. Maka dari itu, kisah ini menjadi begitu menarik.

Lalu, ada juga kisah Untuk Bapak yang cukup menyentuh. Hubungan antara anak dan orang tua yang begitu syahdu selalu bisa membuat saya merasa hangat. Terakhir, Sepasang Mata Mentapa Rain juga menunjukkan bahwa di balik kepolosan anak-anak, tersimpan agensi yang begitu kuat. Anak-anak dengan caranya sendiri mampu menunjukkan bahwa mereka mengerti dan peduli akan sekitar.

Oh, iya, rasanya tidak adil apabila saya tidak menyinggung kisah terakhir di buku ini, yakni Malam Terakhir. Jujur, pertama kali membaca kisah tersebut, saya langsung teringat pada Laut Bercerita. Iya, kisah tersebut lagi-lagi menyentil kondisi ketika mahasiswa direpresi oleh para penguasa. Suatu hubungan yang jauh dari simetris dan begitu pilu. Ahh, membaca Laut Bercerita dan Malam Terakhir menimbulkan kesan yang sama bagi saya. Betapa tak adilnya orang-orang yang selalu menutup mereka.

Kesimpulan

Saya memang tak pandai membuat resensi sebuah kumpulan cerpen. Akan tetapi, kisah yang disajikan oleh Leila ini seolah menjadi peingat bahwa realitas sosial di sekitar kita tidaklah semuanya bahagia. Bagaimana kita bersikap dan memahami apa yang terjadi di sekitar kita menjadi sangat penting untuk memanusiakan manusia.

A gift from my lecturer when I was in college

Finally, I understand why this book is very dark and gloomy. Then, I also understand why many people said that Sylvia Plath is a feminist icon in her era.

To be honest, I never expect that I could have this book. Yeah, my lecturer suddenly gave this book in one of my consultation sessions. After that, I made a promise that I have to read this book. No matter how hard and dark is the story.

At first, it was very hard to read this book. Moreover, the language is somehow couldn't be understood easily. Then, the story itself is overlapping. So, I was a little bit confused when I read this book.

I have to agree with the synopsis of this book. This is a shocking, realistic, and intense story about women. Esther Greenwood is a student with a brilliant future. She got a scholarship, the opportunity to get an internship program in a prominent company, and so on. You can say that she is very fortunate.

But then, everything that Esther feel seems very confusing. She didn't know what's the purpose of her life. She couldn't decide what she want to do in her life. After that, Esther was very broken. She couldn't think. At first, writing is Esther's way of life. She could express many things through her writing. Even, she knew that she was best at writing. Then, after all of that realization, Esther couldn't write anymore.

Esther was losing herself. She just felt that she live inside the bell jar without any way out. In the end, Esther has tried to end her life. She felt no longer important to live anymore.

A lot of things happened in this book. Mental health? Suicidal thought? Feminism? Social moral? Yeah, I think you could find all of those issues in this book. This is indeed a dark and gloomy book.

Some people said that this book could be defined as a journey of Esther's craziness. Well, it's not false at all. From this book, I exactly can feel how people act toward someone who ever tried to suicide. I know a person like Esther is very fragile. But, it doesn't mean that she was crazy, right? Of course, she needs help from professionals, but the way everyone around her looks at her is very complicated.

To be honest, I wonder, how much similar is the life of Esther and Sylvia? This story in some way felt so realistic. Maybe I won't be surprised at all if Esther is Sylvia herself. The fact that Sylvia end herself after this book has been published, made me feel that maybe The Bell Jar is the final thought from Sylvia towards everything. This book is about Sylvia's thoughts about women, writing, life, mental health, and suicide.

I have to admit that I got some difficulties finishing this book. I almost give up every time I read this book. But, finally, I can finish it and got many lessons from it.

I really don't want to recommend you to read this book if you don't have any stable conditions.

To be honest, I decided to receive this ARC and agree to make the review in March. But, I got a lot of hurdles by the time. Yeah, dealing with my reading slump, anxiety, and all of my negative thoughts, made me choose to bring my attention to another thing. Gratefully, I can overcome all of those things and back to writing again.

So, actually, this book isn't really a hard book. Yet, I have to admit that this book is a unique children book. It is still about elementary student girls that have big curiosity. It is still about how this girl tried to adjust herself to the new school. Yeah, it looks like an ordinary children book. But, more and more I read it, I have to give a big clap towards Kate Klise. She is indeed a genius at making the story become more engaging.

The story began with the announcement that Rita B. Danjereous will be the new librarian of Appleton Elementary School. The strange thing about her is, the principal, Noah Memree didn't remember about hiring her. Moreover, please, her name is very weird. Is that the pronunciation of dangerous?

The new school board has been chosen. Ivana Beprapwa is the name. She is the owner of the Beprapwa Attire. As the school broad, Ivana adjusts many rules there, including the outfit rule for students. The conflict began from the desire of Ivana to fire Rita B. Danjerous.

Well, what will happen then? Will the Appleton Elementary School could survive?

When the first time I put this book in my reader apps, I didn't expect anything. But, after I open the book, I know that this book is very unique. They use such a unique format. Yeah, if I have to recall back then, this book's format is quite similar to Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers. The story is been told through letters and memos. The letter and memo itself came from Ivana Beprapwa, Rita B. Danjereous as the librarian, Principal Noah Memree, the secretary of the school, and others. So, there's no real narrative here.

As I said before, I like that unique format. Then, I like the story too. It's not only about how the librarian and her daughter were adjusting their life into the new environment. It's more than that. One thing that I can assure you are, you will hate Ivana so much. Lol.

Okay, that's all for my today review. I got a lot of fun when reading this book. I hope you can feel it too.

To be honest, I choose this book to complete my Balabala Reading Challenge 2020 for a book written by a South American. I thought, Angela Dominguez is from South American since she talks in Spanish. But, the more I read this novel, the more I realize that Dominguez is Mexican. So, this book failed to make me complete the challenge. Sigh.

But anyway, for a children book, this book has a something that we should appreciate.

Stella and her insecurity

For Stella, attending school with a new friend is a hard thing to do. Moreover, for this year, she couldn't be in one class with her best friend, Jenny. Somehow, Stella felt so insecure when she knows that she wasn't American. Yeah, her family is from Mexico. So, in some occasions, Stella couldn't manage to speak in English. She usually mixed up with Spanish when she is really nervous.

Stella's shyness to talk made her another classmate make fun of her. Jessica is one of the worst. She always insult Stella and make Stella questioning whether she literally belongs to he class or not. Onde day, there was a new student that will be in Stella's class. Stella wonder whether she can make friend with the new classmate or not.

My opinion

Well, at first, this is just an ordinary children book with an ordinary story. But it turns out that I was wrong. In this book, Dominguez tried to tell us about the difficulty of a Mexican children that have to struggle to attend school in America. The language barrier somehow make them shy and insecure. Just like Stella, she didn't know what to say because she feels different. She isn't American but she does living in America. How she can adjust her life into the American's live with the whole differences that she may have, is the main story of this book.

The character of Stella maybe is not really adorable in my opinion. But, she is a kind a girl who never give up. At first maybe you can find her shyness is really limiting her, but after all, she can manage it well. The character changing process is quite believable here.

Conclusion

It's a good children with a unique topic, tho. It will be relatable to some points and good for children to acknowledge the diversity around them.

Setelah kemarin membaca dua novel panjang dari Agatha Christie, sekarang saatnya saya menyelami antologi kasus dari Hercule Poirot. Well, tampaknya dalam hal ini Christie masih mencari gaya menulisnya. Alhasil, ada beberapa cerita yang cukup memorable, ada juga yang malah membuat saya mengernyitkan dahi karena penyelesaiannya yang tak cukup masuk akal.

Sejumlah cerita yang saya ingat

Kalau boleh jujur, saya lupa ada berapa tepatnya kasus yang termasuk di dalam antologi ini. Akan tetapi, memang tidak semua kasus saya ingat. Beberapa kasus yang cukup memorable bagi saya adalah kasus apartemen Mrs. Robinson yang terlalu murah, klaim asuransi yang mencurigakan, serta pencurian kalung mutiara di kamar hotel.

Nama-nama tokohnya? Entahlah. Saya tidak terlalu ingat. Yaa, sama seperti ketika saya membaca kisah Sherlock Holmes dalam sejumlah antologi kisahnya, saya betul-betul tidak ingat dengan nama para tokoh. Bahkan, detail dari kasusnya sendiri.

Seperti yang telah saya singgung di atas, ada sejumlah kasus yang punya twist tidak biasa. Akan tetapi, ada juga kasus yang twist-nya seolah dipaksa masuk. Alhasil malah tidak menjadikan cerita sepenuhnya utuh. Setidaknya ini menurut pandangan saya.

Di lain sisi, kadang kala saya cukup kasihan dengan Hastings. Ia terpaksa seolah selalu dipermainkan oleh Poirot. Pada titik ini, saya menyadari tingkat menyebalkan Poirot dan Holmes lumayan mirip.

Terjemahan yang cukup bikin frustrasi

Jujur, saya sangat menyukai terjemahan untuk The Mysterious Affairs at Styles dan Murder on the Links. Akan tetapi, untuk Poirot Investigates ini, saya merasa agak kecewa. Mengapa? Karena banyak sekali istilah dalam bahasa Perancis yang tidak diterjemahkan. Saya tidak akan keberatan apabila yang tidak terjemahkan seperti mon ami yang memang cukup familiar. Sayangnya, banyak kalimat panjang yang tidak terjemahkan di novel ini. Hal tersebut menganggu keasyikan saya dalam membaca.

Kemudian, ketika saya cek ulang, ternyata penerjemah dari Poirot Investigates dan Murder on the Links adalah orang yang sama, yakni Suwarni A.S. Saya kurang mengerti mengapa vibe menerjemahkan dari ibu Suwarni terasa berbeda di kedua novel ini.

Kesimpulan

Sebagai antologi kasus yang pertama, Poirot Investigates cukup menghibur. Di samping terjemahannya yang mungkin membuat sedikit tak nyaman, kisah-kisah dalam buku ini masih bisa dinikmati.

The Murder on the Links menjadi buku kedua Agatha Christie yang saya baca dalam rangka proyek "baca ulang novel Agatha Christie dari awal". Jujur, kisah dalam novel ini cukup membuat saya kaget dengan twist di akhir. Di sini, jelas Agatha Christie berupaya memutarbalikkan asumsi dari pembaca.

Perjalanan ke Perancis

Suatu hari, Poirot mendapatkan surat dari Monsieur Paul Renauld. Dalam surat tersebut, jelas bahwa Monsieur Renauld sedang ketakutan. Seolah-olah nyawanya di ujung tanduk. Maka dari itu, Poirot memutuskan untuk pergi ke Perancis bersama dengan Hastings. Sayangnya, kedatangan Poirot terlambat karena Monsieur Renauld telah ditemukan tak bernyawa di tengah lapangan golf tak jauh dari rumahnya.

Berbagai misteri tentu menyelimuti kematian dari Monsieur Renauld. Mulai dari Madam Renauld yang ditemukan terikat pada saat kejadian, jubah yang dikenakan Monsieur Renauld yang menurut Poirot terlalu panjang, hingga surat yang ditemukan Poirot dalam saku mantel Monsieur Renauld. Poirot yakin ada banyak kejanggalan dari bukti-bukti tersebut. Sayangnya, Poirot juga berkali-kali menemukan kegagalan karena asumsi-asumsi yang telah ia bangun runtuh di tengah jalan.

Kurangnya petunjuk dan hadirnya detektif kepolisian Perancis bernama Giraud, membuat langkah Poirot begitu berat. Di sisi lain, Hastings sempat bertemu dengan sosok gadis yang menarik hatinya. Gadis itu tak pernah mau memberitahu identitasnya. Hastings hanya mengenalinya sebagai Cinderella. Pada Cinderella lah, Hastings mulai jatuh cinta. Sayangnya, yang Hastings tak pernah sangka, ada kaitan antara Cinderella dengan matinya Monsieur Renauld.

Kisah yang penuh misteri

Jujur, menurut saya, kisah di novel kedua ini jauh lebih kompleks daripada The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Bahkan, bisa dibilang sangat kompleks. Dari awal, saya betul-betul tidak punya bayangan siapakah pelaku yang sebenarnya dari pembunuhan Monsieur Renauld. Bukannya semua orang mencurigakan, malahan menurut saya, tidak ada seorang pun yang mencurigakan. Baik Madam Renauld, Jack Renauld--anak dari Monsieur Renauld, Madam Daubreuil yang mencurigakan, dan lainnya. Meskipun mereka memiliki motif, tapi rasanya belum sekuat itu untuk menjadi tersangka.

Baiklah. Sebagai pencerita, kadang saya memahami perasaan Hastings yang merasa tak dihargai oleh Poirot. Meskipun menurut saya, Sherlock Holmes lebih menyebalkan daripada Poirot. Akan tetapi, kadang kala narasi Hastings ini memang terlalu kemana-mana. Sejujurnya, saya tidak terlalu protes akan kehadiran kisah asmara dari Hastings. Tentu malah bagus karena menunjukkan sisi lain dari Hastings. Tapi, memang peran Hastings belumlah sevokal layaknya Watson. Yaa, memang tidak seharusnya dibandingkan.

Untuk penyelesaian, mungkin memang banyak sekali unsur kebetulan yang muncul. Akan tetapi, saya rasa misteri yang dihadirkan oleh Christie di sini jauh lebih kompleks. Ia betul-betul membuat saya tak percaya bahwa pelakunya adalah orang yang paling tak saya duga. Akan tetapi, memang terasa kurang kuat bukti yang mengarah ke sosok tersebut.

Untuk versi terjemahannya sendiri, saya rasa terjemahan untuk The Murder on the Links sudah bagus. Berbeda dengan novel yang sedang saya baca sekarang--Poirot Investigates. Padahal penerjemahnya sama. Entahlah. Agak sedih juga karena gaya menerjemahkannya terasa begitu berbeda.

Kesimpulan

Sebagai kisah kedua, menurut saya Christie berhasil menjerat pembaca. Mungkin ada banyak pendapat yang berlawanan, tapi saya masih menikmati kisah Poirot di sini.

Dari dulu, saya memang berkeinginan untuk membaca semua buku Agatha Christie. Sayangnya, semasa saya masih SMA, di rental novel langganan tidak ada serial yang lengkap. Yaa, harus saya akui saya ini cukup keras kepala. Meskipun buku Agatha Christie bisa dibaca terpisah, rasanya tidak lengkap kalau saya tidak membaca kisah Agatha dari awal. Jadilah kemarin saya tertarik untuk membaca The Mysterious Affair at Styles karena termasuk kisah besar Poirot yang pertama.

Misteri di Styles

Kala itu, Hastings sedang berkunjung ke rumah kawanya di Styles, John Cavendish. Sebagai orang yang sempat terlibat dalam perang, Hastings memang membutuhkan sedikit waktu untuk berlibur. Ternyata, kedatangannya tersebut disabut oleh kematian Emily Inglethorpe yang kaya raya. Iya, Mrs. Inglethorpe adalah ibu tiri John Cavendish.

Banyak orang yang perlu dicurigai dalam kasus tersebut. Mulai dari kakak-beradik Cavendish, John dan Lawrence. Istri John Cavendish, Mary Cavendish yang terkesan selalu menutupi sesuatu. Mr. Inglethorpe, suami Mrs. Inglethorpe yang baru dan diyakini akan mewarisi seluruh harta Mrs. Inglethorpe apabila dia meninggal. Kasus di Styles ini rumit dan sulit sekali dipecahkan. Tak ada bukti yang betul-betul jelas dalam kasus ini. Untungnya, ada Hercule Poirot yang sempat mendapat perlindungan dari Mrs. Inglethorpe. Maka, manta anggota polisi Belgia itu pun mulai beraksi dengan sel-sel kelabu miliknya. Siapakah dalang dibalik meninggalnya Mrs. Inglethorpe? Apakah dia hanya sekadar mendapat serangan jantung atau meninggal karena diracun?

Pada dasarnya, saya tidak pernah meyalahkan apabila pihak penerbit berusaha sebisa mungkin untuk menarik minat pembeli. Salah satunya adalah dengan mencetak ulang suatu buku dengan sampul baru. Nah, menurut saya, Gramedia Pustaka Utama cukup cerdas dalam melakukan hal ini. Kalau tidak salah ingat, sudah ada tiga jenis sampul yang dibuat oleh GPU untuk buku-buku Agatha Christie.

Jujur, sampul untuk buku yang saya baca ini menarik. Terlihat sederhana dan rapi. Gambarnya pun tidak berlebihan dan tentunya terlihat jauh lebih modern. Saya suka sampul yang sekarang. Bagi para kolektor, pasti akan sulit sekali memutuskan untuk membeli sampul yang mana untuk dikoleksi. Hoho.

Opini Saya

Harus saya akui, mungkin inilah pertama kalinya saya betul-betul tergerak untuk membaca kisah Hercule Poirot dari awal. Mungkin efek dari menonton Knives Out beberapa minggu lalu dan juga Murder on the Orient Express. Alhasil, saya tergugah untuk membaca seluruh kisah Agatha Christie.

Saya memang punya niatan untuk membaca kisah Hercule Poirot dari dulu, akan tetapi memang belum punya kesempatan. Maka dari itu, ketika sekarang saya bisa, mengapa tidak?

Jujur, ketika membaca kisah ini, mau tidak mau saya membandingkan cara kerja Poirot dengan Holmes. Dan, memang cukup terasa perbedaan cara kerja keduanya. Lalu, saya juga merasa bahwa alur yang digunakan oleh Agatha Christie dan Aoyama Gosho--pencipta kisah Detektif Conan, cukup mirip. Setidaknya menurut cara pandang saya.

Menurut saya, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lebih banyak berfokus pada cerita motif dari pelaku. Hal tersebut sering kali membuat saya seolah "terlepas" dari kasus intinya. Itulah yang sedikit kurang saya suka dalam gaya penceritaan Doyle. Akan tetapi, cara Agatha Christie termasuk cara bercerita yang saya suka. Ia haya berfokus pada bagaimana Poirot mengungkap misteri yang sedang diselidikinya.

Untuk Misteri di Styles ini sendiri, jujur twist yang disajikan cukup membuat saya tidak menyangka. Saya memang mencurigai satu orang dari awal, akan tetapi ternyata kecurigaan saya tersebut tidak terbukti. Yang ada, orang yang dicurigai terang-terangan--yang biasanya bukan berakhir menjadi tersangka, malah menjadi tersangka sebenarnya. Saya salut pada Agatha Christie yang berhasil memutarbalikkan kenyataan di dalam kisah ini.

Oh iya, saya kemarin sempat berpikir peran Hastings itu akan mirip dengan peran Watson dalam Sherlock Holmes. Setidaknya dalam hal menjadi narator seluruh kisah Poirot. Akan tetapi, kawan saya menampik hal tersebut. Ia mengatakan bahwa Hastings tidak selalu ada dalam setiap kisah Poirot. Otomatis, saya jadi penasaran dengan bagaimana kisah Poirot yang lainnya.

Kesimpulan

Sebagai pembuka kisah, saya rasa Misteri di Styles ini patut diapresiasi. Meskipun sejumlah orang menyatakan bahwa kisah ini bukan kasus terbaik dari Poirot, akan tetapi saya rasa Misteri di Styles cukup menarik untuk dibaca.

When I was looking for book with the word "library" on its title in Goodreads, I found this interesting book. To be honest, I choose this book because this is another middle grade book. Well, I just don't want to read a heavy topic book. So, here is the story of me while exploring Mr. Lemoncello's library.

The New Library and 12 Fortunate Children 

One day, the new library will be open. No one know what's inside the new library. Only the head librarian and Mr. Luigi Lemoncello who know the whole part of the new library. Yeah, Luigi Lemoncello is a genius. He has invented numerous kind of games, start from board games, word, games, and also video games. Of course, everyone in the city are very excited with the new library, including Kyle.

Kyle Keeley is a gamer. Yeah, he is the biggest fan of game. Actually, the whole Keeley family are very addicted to game. No wonder if Kyle has completed a different kind of games since at the very young age. When he knew that there will be 12 special entrance ticket to spend the night in the new library, Kyle with his full effort try to win the ticket. Long story short, with a little bit drama here and there, finally Kyle succeed to be one of 12 fortunate children who will spend one full night at the new library--before everyone else in town.

So, what will happen inside the library? What Luigi Lemoncello hide from everyone inside the library? Read it to find a new form of experience that will be a mixture of Charlie and Chocolate Factory and A Night in the Museum.

The Paradise for a Bibliophile

I have to agree with several reviews about this book, this book is a paradise for a bibliophile. There is no perfect place for a bibliophile than a library. With full of books and another source of reading. I wonder, if this library does exist, it should be very amazing.

To be honest, I am very excited when I read this book. Grabenstein in my opinion is very genius because he can combine about the book and the games. He invite the reader to feel the thrill when Kyle and friends try to figure the way out of the library. I like the story because this is a great children book, or should I say a middle grade one?

Then, the character from this book, even though there are more than 5 characters, I think all of them have their own uniqueness. So, they won't be forgetful. First, there is Kyle the gamer; Akimi, Kyle's bestfriend that ask Kyle to cooperate from the very start; Sierra, the book nerd that never put her book down; Miguel, Kyle's friend who made the neatest essay for the entrance ticket to the library; Haley, the school princess; Andrew, the member of the school library; and Charles, the ambitious boy with a rude attitudes.

All of them have their own portion and it made the story much more interesting. The main story of this book is about how to escape from Mr. Lemoncello's library. There will be a lot of games that will be book related. So, you can say this book have an interesting plot story.

After I read this book and I realized this is the beginning of the series, It made me want to read the other books in the series. Well, let me see when I will read the other books.
